Research themes

Biodiversity and ecosystem functioning. Basic and applied research in the field of quantification and mapping of marine and terrestrial biodiversity, phylogeny, evaluation and quantification of ecosystem functions and services, ecological quality indices, effects of climate change and various natural and anthropogenic impacts.

Adaptations and ecophysiology. Investigations on the well-being of marine and terrestrial animal and plant organisms, to evaluate their physiological well-being, investigating appropriate biomarkers and through histological investigations.

Ecotoxicological evaluation and monitoring and marine environmental pollution, marine microbiology. Tests conducted on marine invertebrates and complex aqueous matrices on the presence and effects of chemicals released into the coastal marine environment. Evaluation of microbial biodiversity with repercussions on fishing and aquaculture activities.

Extraction and evaluation of the effects of bioactive molecules of marine and terrestrial, animal and plant origin.

Fungal and plant bioremediation of contaminated environments: Contamination by heavy metals and/or hydrocarbons, biomonitoring and mitigation of atmospheric and soil pollution with nature-based solutions, with applications to the environmental, food, human and animal health and science of materials.

Evaluation and mapping of natural biodiversity. Analysis, cartography and modeling relating to the flora-vegetational, fauna and microbiological components, also with predictive value and reference to climate change, flood events, fires.

Evaluation of ecosystem services towards risk reduction.

Earth Dynamics. Basic research on the structure, composition, and temporal evolution of the Earth, reconstruction and modelling of its internal dynamics, coupled with the construction and modeling of surface environments and the start and evolution of living organisms.

Geological and geothematic cartography applied to the territory (in collaboration with CNR and Civil Protection). Geological, geomorphological cartography and inventory of landslides aimed at the defense of inland and coastal environments; mapping of the seabed to define its danger.

Seismic monitoring, civil protection and infrastructure. North-western Italy regional seismic network (http://www.distav.unige.it/rsni/rete.php) integrated into the national surveillance system of the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology - INGV. Seismic micro-zoning for urban planning and geological and geotechnical problems related to the seismic emergency.

Monitoring and prevention of geo-hydrological and geomorphological risk. Studies of landslides and urban floods, improvement of the territory's resistance to weather-hydrological risk, adaptation plans to climate change, hydraulic regimentation, sustainable urban drainage.

Coastline management. Coastal erosion and defense, innovative intervention and monitoring techniques, marine floods and warning systems; geomorphological and hydrodynamic danger for bathing, identification of risk areas.

Monitoring of port areas. Dredging, sediment removal in ports and remediation of sediments with different biotic and abiotic matrices; heavy minerals as markers of sediment provenance; evaluation of the of metals mobility and availability; characterization of port water.

Aquifer and environmental pollution. Geochemical maps of Liguria, mineral reactivity and release/sequestration of ecotoxic elements; remediation of polluted soils; identification and quantification of fibrous harmful minerals in excavated earth and rocks and in the workplace in the context of environmental monitoring associated with large constructions.
