Mineral Separation Laboratory

LOCATION: Palazzo delle Scienze, Ground floor Room T1

RESEARCH TOPICS:

The research activity of the laboratory consists in the separation of mineralogical phases starting from samples of rock up to sediment. The different types of geological materials comprise: colloidal mud from rivers, silty sandy sediments from rivers and sea soils, as well as, mineral separates from sedimentary-, magmatic-,and metamorphic-rocks. The rock samples reduced into smaller grain sizes by crushing and grinding. Subsequently, the rock granulates or the soil is sieved using vibrating sieves to produce particle size curves, to separate specific particle size ranges, and to prepare

separates for furtheranalysis. Mineral separates of less than 200 μm grain-size characterized by different magnetic susceptibility can be separated by using the magnetic separator Frantz.

The processing, depending on the type of sample and the mineral phase to be obtained, fo

llows different stages including the use of the instruments available in the lab:

crushing (fly press)

sieving machine (vibrating sieves)

magnetic separation (Frantz magnetic separator)

drying stove

muffle (up to 1000°C)

optical microscope
