An hidden fan-shaped geological structure has been discovered beneath the Antarctic Ice Sheet

Beneath the East Antarctic ice sheet, which is over 3 kilometers thick in some areas, lies a vast geological structure that was previously unknown. It was identified by an international team led by the University of Genoa in a study published in Nature Geoscience, one of the most authoritative international scientific journals in the field of Earth sciences.

The work is the result of an international scientific collaboration coordinated by the University of Genoa and was carried out with the support of the National Antarctic Research Program.

The publication in Nature Geoscience confirms the international significance of the research and UniGe’s role in the study of Antarctica and deep geodynamic processes which, although originating in the ancient past, continue to influence the landscape hidden beneath the ice and the evolution of the ice sheet.
