Paleontology Laboratory

LOCATION: Palazzo delle Scienze, first floor, Room I. 32

RESEARCH TOPICS: The PalaeoLab at DISTAV served two functions: 1. host and preserve the historical palaeontological collections stored in the Department. The PalaeoLab is hosting the following taxonomic collections: Algae by Airoldi, Mastrorilli and Vannucci, Invertebrates by Pareto and other minor Authors, and Oligocene Plants from the Santa Giustina Basins (SV). Such collections comprehend more than 10 thousend hand specimens, over 5 thousend thin sections and around 50 written theses; 2. hosts the active members of the PalaeoLab, whose focus is the study of ancient palaeoenvironments by means of evolutionary changes of both body and trace fossils. There is a dedicated focus on microfossils, especially on Eocene larger benthic foraminifera which are abundant in the region.

LABORATORY EQUIPMENT: digital camera Delta Pix by 136 Invenio model 6EIII mounted on a custom made Optech GZ808 optical stereomicroscope with optical range from 0.2x to 40x and dedicated workstation; double seating Polarized microscope Leitz Laborlux 12 pol with dinoCam and dedicated workstation, Codevintec Gamma Ray Surveyor Vario (VN6 Nal(Ti)), MMPRD Portable Rock Drill with 35mm diameter and 15cm drilling depth.
