Laboratory of Fisheries biology

LOCATION: Palazzo delle Scienze, VI floor (laboratory), VII floor (office)

RESEARCH TOPICS/BRIEF DESCRIPTION:
The activities of the Laboratory are organized into various research areas, which can be summarized as follows. Fishery: Monitoring of professional pelagic fishing, demersal trawl fishing, and small-scale artisanal coastal fishing, with a focus on the biology and ecology of target and by-catch species, as well as the selectivity of the fishing gear used. Biodiversity: Sampling aimed at studying the vagile components of pelagic and benthic ecosystems (fish, crustaceans, and cephalopods) and monitoring of alien species. Cetaceans and Sea Turtles: Research on stranded cetaceans, causes of death and related pathologies, biology and ecology of the species and interactions with fisheries. Monitoring and management of sea turtle nesting. Large Pelagics: Research on the ecology and biology of key pelagic species (tuna, swordfish and elasmobranchs) and satellite tagging activities. Modeling: Development of quantitative assessment models of target and by-catch species in commercial fisheries, with a focus on the spatial dynamics of fishery resources and fishing fleets.
